Kansas City Municipal Stadium
Kansas City, MO
2023
Kansas City Municipal Stadium at 22nd & Brooklyn was the home of the Negro League Champions, Kansas City Monarchs (1923-1954), Former NY Yankees AA team, Kansas City Blues (1923-1954), Kansas City Athletics (1955-1967), Kansas City Royals (1969-1972), & Kansas City Chiefs (1963-1971.) After working on a concept for a new downtown stadium and while observing relics in the Chiefs Hall of Fame at Arrowhead, and idea popped into my head. What did the old Municipal Stadium look like in Kansas City? What if I recreated the old ballpark?
After searching the Internet for blueprints, visiting Clem’s Baseball Stadium List & calling Osborne Engineering (original architects of 1923 Muehlebach Field), I came across the website of Ethan Bardolph. Being passionate about baseball history & an 3d modeling hobbyist, Ethan created a 3d model of the old Municipal Stadium. Through animation, he tells the story of Charlie Finley’s exploits while owner of the Kansas City Athletics. I reached out to Ethan (Chicago Black Hawks), to collaborate on recreating the old Municipal Stadium.
While researching the old stadium, I met Dave Pomeroy, a Kansas City native who has been working on a documentary of the Kansas City Athletics for the last eight years. Dave has interviewed many Kansas City legends like Buck O’Neil, George Toma & others and is currently seeking investors to finish his project.
The project became a labor of love. I enjoyed recreating the old ballpark and providing a historical precedent as the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs determine their future homes in Kansas City, MO.
