Downtown Stadium & Ballpark District Concept
Kansas City, MO
2022-2023
Project Completed while Principal at Mammoth Sports Construction.
In the fall of 2022, while design principal/director at Mammoth Sports Construction, I met a local developer that had an idea to enhance the downtown Kansas City South Loop project. What would it look like to have a new downtown Royals stadium bookend the east side of the new park? They asked us to provide a site plan and a perspective rendering of what that would look like.
I was like a kid in a baseball card store with $50 from mowing lawns burning a hole in my pocket. At the same time I was asked to do this design exercise, I was visiting great ballparks like Fenway Park, Oracle Park and Coors field doing reconnaissance for the Pickle4 Ballpark Series. These great ballparks influenced the design as they are great examples of how ballparks become an integral anchor to place.
The stadium design emanated from the field of play which took its shape from the existing field at Kauffman Stadium. The red brick facade echoes the historic stockyard warehouses of Kansas City’s west bottoms while the copper clad overhead canopy structure and circulation towers were planned to be skinned with cladding from the iconic Kansas City Star building currently perched at the site.
The goal was to create a design that would compliment the existing composition of the city and provide a place for kids of all ages to dream big.
