Galileo’s Pavilion*
Overland Park, KS
2012-13
*A Studio 804 project.
In the fall of 2012, I was enrolled in my last year of graduate studies at the University of Kansas. I was able to work under the distinguished professor Dan Rockhill in a student lead design build studio named Studio 804. The project was on the campus of Johnson County Community College, a college I had attended for many budget minded credits. The project is a campus show piece for sustainable architecture and encompasses a sun dial sculpture named Galileo’s Garden by the late internationally acclaimed sculptor Dale Eldred that was previously in the location. As an architectural student with a background in construction, the project was my first experience of going through the design process, constructing a designed work and seeing how the building enriched the surrounding campus. The frosted glazing louver solution was the result of an iterative process of my MIG welding prowess or lack there of. The project is LEED Platinum Certified & Passive House Institute US (PHIUS) Certified.
